Patient advocacy is an essential aspect of nursing practice, where healthcare professionals support and protect patients’ rights, dignity, and best interests. In the emergency department, nurses are often tasked with providing urgent care while also navigating complex ethical and legal challenges. They are frequently in positions where they must advocate for patients who may be unable to speak for themselves, such as those in critical conditions, those under anesthesia, or those with limited communication abilities.
University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, a leading healthcare provider in Nigeria, is an important site to evaluate the role of emergency nurses in patient advocacy. With its large patient population and wide range of emergency cases, the hospital provides an ideal environment to examine how emergency nurses advocate for patients' rights, ensure informed consent, and manage difficult situations where the patient's voice may be absent or compromised.
While patient advocacy is an integral component of nursing care, it is often challenging for emergency nurses to balance the demands of urgent medical care with advocacy efforts. At University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, emergency nurses may face numerous obstacles, such as high patient volumes, resource limitations, and time constraints, that may hinder their ability to fully engage in patient advocacy. This study seeks to evaluate how emergency nurses at the hospital fulfill their role as patient advocates and the impact of their advocacy on patient care.
The study will focus on evaluating the role of emergency nurses in patient advocacy at University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include challenges in measuring advocacy behaviors, variations in the interpretation of advocacy roles, and potential biases in self-reported data.
